So it seems like the plain old TIE/LN did quite well for itself in this fight. That still leaves 18 Rebel craft to be shot down by only 4 TIE Fighters off-screen. Luke shoots down one TIE and Wedge another. At least one X-Wing is taken out by AA fire (Porkins). Darth Vader personally accounts for three each of Y-Wings and X-Wings downed.
We don't see the fate of every single ship involved, but after the Death Star is destroyed, we see only two X-Wings and one Y-Wing flying away with the Falcon. That brings us to a total of 8 TIE/LN and 1 TIE Advanced, however it should be noted that Vader's wingmen accompanied him to the trench and do not take part in the larger dogfight. A short time later, Vader launches with his two wingmen. During the approach to the Death Star, it looks like about 2/3 X-Wing, 1/3 Y-Wing. The Imperial officer reports to Darth Vader that a force of 30 Rebel ships is attacking.
However, the only time we see a relatively straight-forward dogfight between these ships in a primary source, A New Hope, what do we actually see? People keep talking about how the TIE Fighter isn't as good as an X-Wing, because they use swarm tactics, they lack shields, fewer guns, etc.
